Traveling Toward Fire

A Premature FI Experiment

Homeschool And Haircuts

Travel Log: Day 45 (8/11), Jaco Costa Rica

We had a really good day today. It was the first day of homeschool and we got to put our plan to the test. We had a few glitches through the day. Examples are that we had some trouble getting assignments to flow to BC in Khan Academy, and our blocks of time were too tight. We worked through those things though and had a pretty successful day overall. BC’s elective for intro to astrophysics seems to be sparking some interest in him. He had a bunch of space questions before bed which is a welcome change from minecraft monologues.

We went to the pool in the afternoon. JC and I worked out a new plan for the schedule, providing more time on the core subjects and rotating some others.

We went back to the same pizza place from last week (Rioasis). It was just as good this time around, except for BC pouting because I wouldn’t let him take the cheese off of more than one piece of pizza. We even ordered spaghetti for him as well so I don’t have a lot of sympathy for his pickiness.

It was day two of school today. Things went much more smoothly with the modified schedule. We’ll make one more tweak to avoid math happening at the same time for AC/BC. It was distracting for them to be hearing numbers from each-other.

In the afternoon we went to the pool again, and then came back and lounged around the condo. JC and AC went to get ice cream and do some shopping at one point.

I finally tweaked my lower back which I saw coming. It kept getting tighter and tighter over the past few weeks. It tends to get tight from my workouts and running, but it was especially tight here. My guess is the extra soft bed put it over the top. I may have to switch sleeping spots with BC so I can use the hard futon.

We’re getting into a pattern now with our days, and today followed the standard pattern mostly. The morning was taken up by school. We went to the pool for a couple hours. JC and I went to the beach to walk for a bit. Then dinner and night time routine.

The one interesting thing that happened is I might have broken the top of my pinky finger. Because my back was still hurting I went and stood over by the TV in the living room. I was stretching upward and stuck my hand in the fan. My pinky tip is a nice purple color now, and it hurts to type.

Another school day in the morning. The only new thing that happened today was that I gave BC a haircut. I struggled in trying to understand how to go about it. I watched a video on youtube a couple days ago and thought I had a rough idea of what I was doing. It really didn’t help much though. It took me a long time to cut the top and I couldn’t make sense of whether I was getting everything. I then used clippers on the side. It looks pretty good overall for a first time amateur.
