Traveling Toward Fire

A Premature FI Experiment

Jet Lag, The Punishment For International Travel

Travel Log: Day 58 (8/24), Tokyo Japan

JC and I slept on the futon bed in the living room last night, and it was actually pretty comfortable. It didn’t save me from bad sleep though. We went to bed at 7:30 and then I woke up at 2am and never went back to sleep. Everyone else slept pretty good though.

A couple of Airbnb issues cropped up today. One is that we can only connect five devices to the Wifi, and the other is the volume down button on the TV doesn’t work because the remote is cracked. I found a workaround for the wifi issue using my phone, which is one of the five connected devices. By turning my phone into a hotspot and disabling mobile data on my phone, it shares the wifi connection. I wasted about 500MB of mobile data before figuring out I had to disable mobile data. I just assumed it would share wifi first. In any case, the remaining unconnected devices will just connect to my phone.

We ate all three meals at Lawson, which is a convenience store much like 7-11. The food there is very good, and it is literally right next door. Between us we had Ramen, salads, shrimp pilaf, bananas, sandwiches, octopus balls, and coffee. The cost has been pretty good, on track with our targeted average of $70/day total. We spent exactly $53.51.

Travel Log: Day 59 (8/25), Tokyo Japan

JC and I moved to the main bedroom last night in an attempt to get better sleep. It turned out to be an even worse night of sleep. I slept pretty hard from 8pm until 12:30am, and then never slept again. There was possibly another 30 minutes of pseudo-sleep here or there but I never went fully under. I have gone full zombie at this point. I’m struggling to remember what I’m doing, can’t really do math, and my balance is sub-par. I’m doing everything I can to set myself up for sleep tonight. I got morning sun, worked out, and walked a lot. Some of this is just out of my control though. Last night as I was trying to sleep, my eyelid muscles were wearing out from trying to keep my eyes closed. My body is just awake overnight.

Homeschool resumed today. It was not the best day for any of us, so we just did the best we could.

We continued with our Lawson meal plan all day. We are going to have to branch out but I want to get some sleep before taking on awkward interactions through a language barrier. It was another under budget food day at $48.72. The quality of food at Lawson’s continues to impress. We got some ice cream that I rate a 10/10. That score might be boosted by grading on a curve against Costa Rica. None of the sweet stuff we tried there was very good.

On a cultural note, today we learned that we aren’t supposed to be making eye contact with people on the street. AC was doing her usual thing of looking and smiling at the people she passed. Nobody confronted us about it, I think JC just discovered and informed us of that cultural fact. It may explain why a Japanese guy was mad-dogging me as we made eye contact. I don’t understand the origin of some of these cultural norms, but it’s their world and I’ll conform to it.
