See day 85 below for the details of the most dangerous neighborhood in Tokyo.
Travel Log: Day 82 (9/17), Tokyo Japan
We woke up from our capsule adventure today coming off of poor sleep and alcohol. After getting our stuff together we checked out around 7:30am. The train system is pretty busy at that time so we opted to go to Denny’s for breakfast to kill some time. Denny’s in Japan is not as good as the US, with one exception, the coffee. The coffee was really good and was an espresso type machine sort of like the hot coffee we get at Lawson.
After breakfast we hopped the trains and came back to our Airbnb that is starting to feel so much like home. We pushed through school and had Lawson for lunch and dinner. The day was rounded out with a couple walks, and some research into our Team Labs Planets excursion tomorrow.
Travel Log: Day 83 (9/18), Tokyo Japan
The day started with the first three subjects of school, and then we started making our way to Team Labs Planets. The train system is becoming easy for us now, so no surprises there. Team Labs was conveniently right beside (and visible from) our final train stop. We had a half hour to kill so we found a vending machine in the shade where we drank some cool drinks. I was surprised to see a line that we had to wait through on our way into Team Labs.
Once we were in there we went to the forest portion first. It had some cool exhibits, but at this point in my life it’s hard for anything to blow me away. Same with the next water portion of the museum. It was all very pretty and impressive but I think I got to it twenty years too late.
Lawson dinner and JC and I went on a rare walk alone.
Travel Log: Day 84 (9/19), Tokyo Japan
Nothing special today. School day was entirely in the morning. We went to Lawson which was a little busy because it was around noon. After lunch JC and I went for a long walk, and then a little later went back to Lawson to get dinner and breakfast. FAC was JC’s pick and we watched Rocky V. The kids were really into it as with the previous movies in the series. I’m getting tired of being confined to the foyer/closet area during FAC, and very happy to be moving on to a larger place in Osaka.
Travel Log: Day 85 (9/20), Tokyo Japan
This turned into a pretty busy day. Before lunch rolled around we decided to head to Akiba (electric town) to hit the Don Quijote over there. I wanted to see if they had USB C cables to replace the one we have that’s cracking. They did have them but they were a little too pricey. We ate lunch in the area as well at a place where they carve meat off a larger upright chunk of meat. I had a spicy meat pocket sort of thing and I thought it was really good. BC just had a big thing of fries. JC and AC didn’t like their meals which were also spicy meat in some form. Nobody in this family but me is ready for big time food tourism.
In the evening after a couple drinks, I had the idea that I wanted to find the most dangerous part of Tokyo and go there. It turns out to be an area called Kabukicho in Shinjuku where the red light district is. JC went with me, and we walked around ground zero of that location. It was not dangerous or dirty from anything we could see, and I found that a little disappointing. I guess what makes it the most potentially dangerous area is that it deals in sex transactions of one form or another. That probably does invite a certain atmosphere. However, it’s no comparison to strip club areas of Denver or even just the danger of downtown Denver in general. To be fair we left by 8pm so maybe it gets grimier late at night.
We ate at a nearby British pub which was really tasty. Making our way home from there was a little confusing because we were between stations and we ended up walking away from the stop we arrived at. Ultimately we took off from one station further back which turned out to be a good thing because it was much quieter. The station we arrived at was Shinjuku station which is apparently the busiest train station in the world. It lived up to its reputation. There were people everywhere and the station was so massive we had trouble even finding our way out of it.
Travel Log: Day 86 (9/21), Tokyo Japan
We purposely had a quiet day at home today at the request of AC. I felt the exact same need after touring two very busy areas of Tokyo yesterday. We ate Lawson for all of our meals. JC and I sat at the river for a while which was really nice. A couple walks were mixed in there as well. JC is under the weather with a sore throat.
