Traveling Toward Fire

A Premature FI Experiment

Tumon Night Market & Circling The Island

For information on the Tumon night market and driving around the island, see day 121 below.

Travel Log: Day 120 (10/25), Guam

JC and I went for our first run on Guam, and it was brutal. The heat and humidity were very similar to Costa Rica, but unlike Costa Rica we did not have flat terrain. We ran on the beach side of Pale San Vitores road that runs along the beach. That side was good because there are very few through streets so there’s less stopping for traffic. It was not flat however. The run was constantly either up hill or down hill, and the up hills took it out of us. We stopped at a turnaround point at about 2.5 miles. I felt like I was going to pass out as soon as we stopped running and I ended the day with 202 zone minutes without doing anything physical the rest of the day.

We just lounged around the house the rest of the day. I took a long nap in the afternoon. After that JC, mom and I had some drinks and watched a Guam vlog to get some more ideas of what we want to do while we’re here. We had fried rice for dinner and went to ABC later to get some snacks. Before stopping at ABC we made a pit stop to watch the sunset at the beach and it was well worth the stop. To wrap up the night we watched “The Woman In Cabin 10”, which was timely that it was available because my mom had just finished reading the book.

Travel Log: Day 121 (10/26), Guam

It was an action packed day. The first and longest event was driving around the island in our rental car. I had to make a multi-stop set of directions in google maps in order to have it navigate us around the island. It was a nice drive overall with low traffic, pretty nice roads, and beautiful scenery. We stopped at several locations along the way, mostly lookout points. The idea was to lay eyes on as much of the island as we could, and get a passing feel for each area. I found the southern areas to be interesting in how sleepy they seem. The villages were small and very little appeared to be happening as we passed through.

The first half of the trip was better than the last half. The map directions went haywire after a combo of losing data and not stopping at destinations I had added. That made things a little confusing and then there just wasn’t as much to see in the second half. The towering vegetation prevented coastal views. We were also getting tired of the drive at that point. The most noteworthy attraction in the latter half of the drive was the air force base. We could only see the front and back gates, but mom said it all looked the same.

We eventually ended up all the way back around at the mall where we ate lunch at Cane’s. The kids watched some of the Halloween costume contest, which AC wanted to be in and we didn’t realize it was this early (oops). I went looking for sandals but didn’t find anything.

Tumon Night Market

We went home and relaxed until we got ready to go to the Tumon night market. We walked over there and made a pass through the block of food trucks and popup vendors. The girls wanted to look at some of the things for sale so BC and I split off and got some food. We shared a chicken and pork kabob with rice dish.

After that we went to the far end where we saw this sling ball throwing cage. BC and AC both tried it, and the back story from the guy was that his high school teacher showed them how to make the slings and taught them how to use them. His friends compete in that at a high level, and watching them use it you realize it’s a lethal weapon. I always wondered how David could possibly kill Goliath with a bullshit old fashioned sling throwing a rock, but now I get it.
