Travel Log: Day 146 (11/20), Guam
school and beach
Regular school day, nothing noteworthy. We went to the nearest beach in the afternoon where BC played with his newly built boat. The boat is pretty cool with a sail and outrigger coconuts to keep it stable. While we were there a guy I recognized from Reddit as a professional thief walked into our area. His Chamorro friend brazenly walked by and looked directly in our bag, even after I stopped walking and clearly was watching him. They walked by without incident and then their dog pissed on our bag. I fantasized about beating both of them nearly to death.
bullhorn guy
A little while later another guy showed up in our area and sat down. It started raining and we went up under the same tree where he was and he started talking to us. I’m going to have to coin a phrase for the sort of dude he was, because there are many of him in the world. I can’t recall ever seeing this same behavior from a woman, so I think it’s a dude thing.
The term I will use for them collectively is “bullhorn guy”. It’s not that they are loud, but it’s like their brain is a one way communication device like a bullhorn. He was not looking for a conversation, he was looking to say words to people. We heard about his failing marriage, his shitty job, his art aspirations, and his kids. He barely caught my name by the end of the conversation, and not for a lack of me trying. One of my cousins that I grew up with is a bullhorn guy, which is why I so easily recognize the phenomenon. It’s probably more easily described as narcissism.
mangilao night market
We tried the Mangilao night market one more time, and kind of like the Chamorro Village Wednesday night market, it was better this time around. I guess we just caught a weird series of market days while mom was here. AC and I had smash burgers, JC had some tamales, and BC refused to eat because he was pouting about something. AC bought a printout of her name and sort of the meaning and origin of it. BC almost bought some jewelry (rings) but JC thankfully told him it looked girly. AC told me that at Macy’s BC wanted to look at watches to buy, not to wear, but to display in a nice arrangement. It sounds weird as hell to me but JC says he got that from his cousin who displayed shoes in his bedroom. I’m not sure how many people you’re planning to invite into your bedroom, but it doesn’t seem like a good return on investment.
Travel Log: Day 147 (11/21), Guam
Regular school day, no major troubles. I felt like low-grade crap all day. I woke up with the slightest headache that continued all day until I took a nap in the afternoon. JC and I went to the store for what will probably be the final grocery run in Guam. It cost ~$86, and we’re ending the month around $850 on groceries. That’s unbelievably affordable compared to the initial sticker shock we were experiencing.
FAC went according to normal plans, mostly. AC’s volume finally caught up to us though in a very embarrassing way. AC was revolting (comically) because I wasn’t going to pick Karate Kid II for my movie night pick. We started play fighting as we usually do, but it must have been especially loud. At some point shortly after, BC said someone was at the door.
I thought he must be wrong because I heard nothing. Upon checking the door, there was a couple standing way back from the door. I said hi, not having a clue why they were there. They asked if everything was ok, at which point I knew immediately what was up. Told them AC was notoriously loud and that we were wrestling. I called her over so they could see she was ok. They were the neighbors below us, but the neighbor beside us also came out. I asked her if she could also hear us, and she said yes, she was wondering what was happening. I told them all sorry for the noise and that was that. Hopefully this will be eye opening for AC. We have told her over and over in each prior place, including detached houses, that the neighbors will think something bad is happening because of her volume. However, I think her loudness is hilarious and I don’t want her to stop.
I picked Star Trek for our movie.
