Traveling Toward Fire

A Premature FI Experiment

Guam Beach Exploration

See Day 128 for into on Guam beaches that we explored.

Travel Log: Day 127 (11/1), Guam

JC and I ran today, and it was tough again but better than last week. We at least made it through the 3 mile run and didn’t feel like we were going to die at the end. Our time was not good compared to normal though.

I checked on everything for the October budget, and enough transactions had cleared that I decided to reconcile it. It was a lot to sort through between Japan and Guam with Guam not being fully in the budget this month, but rather pulling from discretionary money. It came out really good though between the surprise car insurance refund and $500 my mom chipped in. We were under a 2% withdrawal rate, so we added some of the discretionary spending into the budget to drain less of the discretionary fund. Between October and September we got it to where they average 4%. I wasn’t expecting that to even out so quickly.

JC mom and I went to lunch at Heavy Hitters to eat some Chamorro food. We all got the half plate and it was still a lot of food. We all thought it was good. Mine had sausage, chicken, and beef with rice and macaroni.

In the afternoon JC and I tried to find a liquor store but struggled and ended up going to Donki to get some drinks. We had FAC (it’s like the Thursday night football brand sometimes being on a non-Thursday), and had some drinks and watched stuff.

Travel Log: Day 128 (11/2), Guam

We felt like doing something today, so we decided to check out some beaches. We plan to visit different clusters each time, and this time we started with those in the vicinity of gun beach. Gun beach was nice and had some distinct differences from Tumon Bay. The sand was super soft where your feet just sink into it. The sand and water were pretty, and there was more coral.

We skirted along the rock cliff to go see what was around it. It turned out to be FaiFai beach (see post feature image), which is a secluded and pretty amazing stretch of beach. We saw a family leaving that and then just two other dudes the entire 200M or so of beach. This is somewhere we’ll return because it’s like private beach.

We drove from there to another beach called Tanguisson beach which wasn’t as impressive. It was unique because it had rock outcroppings in the water though. From this beach we were supposed to be able to quickly get to another called mushroom rock beach but the access road was blocked. Our final destination, Shark Cove Beach, was also blocked.

We hung out around the condo after that. JC and I looked at washing machines because the tenants reported the washer is leaking. A tech is going to look at it on Monday, and we’re getting a new one picked out just in case.

In the evening we went to the Tumon night market again after it finished down-pouring. I got the grilled cheese and tomato soup that JC had last time. It was really good, so I went back and got two more soups to put in the fridge. BC climbed a climbing wall, and AC got a henna tattoo. Mom fell on the walk back which scared JC quite a bit, but she bounced right back up and seems fine. She just landed her foot off the sidewalk into the grass which is lower than the sidewalk. I’m sure she’ll be sore though so we’ll see if she’s up for the Inajaran Natural Pools tomorrow.

After mom’s fall yesterday we kept things low key today. I figured out that if I go through the VPN on the firestick I can watch NFL games on DAZN. We watched the Broncos vs Dallas game we never saw, and then JC and I went to the grocery store. The groceries are getting much more reasonable after settling into a stocked pantry. It only cost about $185 today even with $28 in alcohol. After getting back we watched the new Broncos game vs the Texans, and had game snack type stuff for lunch. A beach trip followed that.

Workout Plan

After getting back from the beach, I got a couple rounds of workouts in under my new plan. I’m getting back to the roots of this plan that I formulated while still working, which I was so successful with. That plan was that I would spread nine rounds of a workout throughout the day whenever I had a chance to take a few minute break. It was great because it just fit into the day while working at home when I would go to the bathroom or just need to step away from the desk in general. Each round consists of two strength exercises, one HIIT, and one core exercise.

After quitting my job this became a little less awesome because I tried packing all nine rounds into one big session. I realized at that point how much work I was actually doing, and how much better I can do it (go harder, recover longer) spreading it through the day. While working I had this split into three different days (nine rounds each) working a different set of muscles each day.

I realized I need to adapt this differently for my new life without work. What I came up with is that I’m mixing all the different body part exercises into a big pool, and aiming to get 27 rounds through the entire week. That results in the same amount of workout, but I can do a round on any day, any time, and will get a random mix of any possible workout. I might be doing legs and chest in the same round. The advantage with this is psychological primarily. It opens the entire week, morning noon and night to bust off rounds of workout. It discourages me from trying to group nine rounds together which is a brutal mental hurdle to clear. Also there’s some science that long breaks between intense rounds of workouts is beneficial for optimal gains.

Evening

In the evening I cut BC and my hair before dinner, and I nailed both of our haircuts. AC and I rounded out the night catching up on her reading me The Maze Runner.
