In this week of travel, I unbelievably get sick again after being sick just six weeks ago in Lisbon (days 334-337). We had our last day of homeschool (day 336). Besides that I spent a lot of time being sick, working on yesalittle.com, and researching cars.
Travel Log: Day 332 (5/25), Spain
Today is labor day in the US, but also a different holiday here in Spain. It’s called Pentacost Day or something like that. Many places were closed down for the day, and the gym was super busy. The pool area at the gym was completely full and had more of a party vibe than I’ve seen other days. Later in the day when I was walking toward the beach I saw people lining the streets just a block into the neighborhoods. There was marching band music playing and parade-like things going on.
Since it’s our final week of homeschool, we have some fun things going on that JC planned. We watched The Croods today and had pop/pillow/PJ day.
I worked with Claude Chat and Claude Code some more to make more minor SEO enhancements to yesalittle.
Travel Log: Day 333 (5/26), Spain
The gym was back to just normal busy levels. Nothing unusual about the gym or school. This was our first day using DuoLingo without max, and it’s not too bad. We generally have enough energy to last 30 minutes, which is just right. I do think we lost video calls with Lily, but we still have other speaking features.
It is our anniversary, so we went out to dinner and drinks while the kids watched movies and had dinner at home. We started off at Mr Robinson since that was fun last time. It was beyond dead with just one other person inside, and a few people outside. We moved on to a bar called Stereo 18 which was supposed to be more lively. There were zero other patrons in there, but the two bartenders were a lot of fun. One of them poured us two free shots, and another partial shot. They were both from Italy and it was fun to talk to them about various things. For dinner we went to a place called SNOB, which has burgers mainly, but some other options. It was really good.
Travel Log: Day 334 (5/27), Spain
I woke up after not sleeping well at all due to alcohol plus allergies. The allergies were really bothering me throughout the day today even though I took Claritin. It wasn’t helping anything that I was probably also hung over.
I never left the Airbnb today to avoid the outside air, and took a shower early in the day as well to get any pollen from last night off of me. Through the day I worked with Claude Code on some enhancements for yesalittle.
We originally had a food tour scheduled today, but thankfully the tour guide cancelled it. He had a couple other parties cancel and didn’t really give us the option to still do it.
Travel Log: Day 335 (5/28), Spain
I slept good last night, but what I thought was allergies is now in my chest. It may not be allergies at all I’m realizing, and it may just be a cold. JC and I went for a walk on the beach. I felt good enough to go to the gym, but I didn’t do any of the HIIT/core stuff when I got back to the Airbnb.
We had a field trip designated for today, but I didn’t feel up to it. JC took the kids to the market we planned to go, which turned out to be pretty small and quick. I really just lounged around the rest of the day. We watched Guardians Of The Galaxy in the evening.
Travel Log: Day 336 (5/29), Spain
I’m feeling better today, but still clearly fighting off this cold. As the day went along I felt worse, as typically happens. JC and I skipped the usual happy hour drinks and had some Coke Zero instead. I also skipped the gym.
For the final day of school, JC had a scavenger hunt around Barcelona prepared for the kids. It was a lot of fun and took them about an hour to complete. We got gelato after that.
I spent some time reviewing phrases in YAL, particularly the ones I had not studied. I have many I will tweak and then split some of them off to get ready for english as a study target.
It was AC’s movie pick tonight and she selected Dead Poets Society. I remember liking that movie, but forgot how good it actually is. AC loved it and will probably watch it many times like she does with any movie she’s into.
Travel Log: Day 337 (5/30), Spain
I still had a pretty bad cough today and couldn’t leave the Airbnb since I didn’t want to pass it around to the world. While inside I worked on another round of changes to YAL with Claude. I reviewed the phrases for naturalness and how they would work with english as the study target. I had to subscribe to another month of Eleven Labs to regenerate the audio on the modified prompts and responses. The next step is going to be allowing the user to select their native language and which language they want to study.
JC and I had a couple drinks around the house in the evening, which turned out to be a mistake. It amplified my garbage feeling and I struggled to stay awake until 1am.
Travel Log: Day 338 (5/31), Spain
After sleeping through the night I felt a lot better today. JC and I resumed our morning beach walk routine, this time going farther to the beach beyond the boat pier. It was kind of cool, with a livelier family heavy crowd.
I decided to go to the gym after our walk since I was feeling good. The gym was nice on a Sunday; I didn’t really have to compete for equipment.
We all went to the park after that and threw the football. I ended up getting too much sun throughout the day, but I’m not burned Jaco bad or anything.
Through the day I continued talking cars with Claude. We came to the mathematical realization that whether we buy a 2026 leaf plus a beater 4×4, a Subaru Crosstrek alone, or a Toyota 4Runner alone, they all end up very similar in cost after 5 or 20 years. The Crosstrek was the cheapest of those three options, but when you compare it to a 2026 Corolla for 26K, the Corolla saves you $80K in costs over 20 years (including opportunity cost). The math is so lopsided in favor of anything with a lower initial outlay of money.
I did most of the work for reconciling our May budget today. I’m going to wait until tomorrow to finalize it in case any final transactions come through.
