Tech Hobby and Volunteering

This week I worked a lot on tech projects that interested me (days 93 and 95). None of them for paid work, just for my own amusement.

FIRE: Day 92 (9/28)

Gym, Spanish, but no tech.

I made burritos today which took up the bulk of the afternoon.

FIRE: Day 93 (9/29)

Gym, Spanish, and quite a bit of tech. I felt motivated to continue setting up the software development pipeline that I’m using for YAL. I’m seeing how automated I can get it. Hopefully to the point where I can create an issue in Github and when it’s ready, tag it as ready for development to have Claude Code pick it up and take it the rest of the way.

I also worked on my eBike brakes, which were sinking pretty deep. They were almost hitting the grips, at which point I won’t have full stopping power. The brake pads seemed to have some life left, so I tightened them up and then had to make additional adjustments to keep them from rubbing when the brake isn’t applied.

In the evening I watched the high school volleyball game on NFHS.

FIRE: Day 94 (9/30)

No gym today because Wednesday is my off day. Went for a long walk with JC.

I took a break from tech stuff today, but did a lot of Spanish. I also spent time looking at bikepacking solutions since that’s essentially what I’ll be doing on my hunting trip. There is some really useful equipment for not very much money that would increase my cargo capacity a lot. It would also be a great solution for family camping potentially. Although JC doesn’t have a mountain bike and technically neither do I if AC is riding her bike (her mountain bike is my old bike).

BC is doing pretty badly in his english language arts class. He’s never been the strongest reader, and he’s an even worse writer. We are starting an at-home program with him, similar to what we’ve done in the past. He and I are reading a novel separately, and then talking about it to practice his recall. We’ll have to figure out something for the writing part of this.

FIRE: Day 95 (10/1)

After Spanish and the gym, I got a spontaneous urge to work more on my YAL development pipeline. That surprises me because I also had my favorite activity waiting for me on my ToDo list – the budget.

I made good progress on the YAL pipeline, and now have it to where I can create a user story (Github issue), tag it as ready for development, and a Claude Code Sonnet agent will spin up in a Linux container and do the work. Once it’s done, a separate agent running Opus reviews the work done by the development agent. When it follows the happy path, my involvement is only creating the user story, and reviewing and merging the pull request. The next step is to set up auto-merge of the PR, at which point I will only be creating the user story, and the rest is automatic.

The budget did eventually get done later in the day. It was a good month at a 3.97% withdrawal rate.

FIRE: Day 96 (10/2)

Spanish, gym, and I wrote a blog post on my tech blog related to the pipeline for YAL.

We had FAC without AC because she went to the homecoming dance. BC picked Sonic II for probably the 5th time. We are going to need to amend the FAC bylaws to allow a protest when the movie has been featured in FAC already.

FIRE: Day 97 (10/3)

I ran this morning but it didn’t go great. I just ran at my baseline pace for three miles.

The four of us volunteered today for a couple hours. It was creating food boxes for kids in need. My job was scooping rice into these tubs that would be taken to tables where the people prepping the boxes were. They would scoop from that into the individual boxes. My job was the most labor intensive I think out of everyone there, which was great. I had maybe five total minutes of down time during the entire shift.

After that JC and AC went over to AC’s friends house to get ready for the homecoming dance. BC played video games, and I watched some random stuff. After dinner we watched an episode of Trent The Traveler.

We had to stay up late to see if AC needed a ride home from the dance, so JC and I watched a movie.

FIRE: Day 98 (10/4)

I mostly watched football today and monitored my fantasy team. We had brownies during the Broncos game and all ended up stuffed after eating dinner.

I wrote the post documenting our September budget during commercials.
