This week I wait and watch to see if my lead foot in South Africa is going to cause me more issues. It was also JC’s birthday. The rest of the week after that was about as mundane as it can get, at least for content in this blog. I spent the bulk of it just working on tech stuff.
FIRE: Day 50 (8/17)
My mood was really good today. It helped that I got an 88 sleep score, which under the new google scoring is like a 97 in the old fitbit system. Connecting with old friends this weekend also helped I’m sure.
I did Spanish and then went to the gym. After that JC and I ran some errands. In the afternoon I worked on my tech stuff.
There weren’t any further Hertz charges today. So far it’s just two speeding tickets I guess. I was remembering back to South Africa and how weird some of the signs were, such as this one.

FIRE: Day 51 (8/18)
Today was JC’s birthday. We went to Wash Park in Denver and walked around there. It’s a place we’ve visited and enjoyed for nearly 20 years. We went out to lunch at a Mexican food place run by Costa Ricans in that area. The food wasn’t the best, which tracks with their sodas.
FIRE: Day 52 (8/19)
I mostly worked on my tech projects today. Also I emailed an old coworker just letting him know what I’m up to and to see how things are going for him. They are in the middle of an AI shakeup at the office, with leadership saying they expect all code to be written by AI in 2027.
FIRE: Day 53 (8/20)
Now that we’ve settled into a groove back at home in our FIRE life, my days are unremarkable. I guess that’s probably the goal – no work stress, plenty of time to do the few things I need to do. Today I did Spanish, some tech stuff, watched a couple episodes of Handmaid’s Tale with JC, and then we watched the high school football game.
FIRE: Day 54 (8/21)
After the gym, I worked on yesalittle to get some tech debt cleaned up. Mainly getting the json schema in order after it had some weird artifacts of conventions left over from many rounds of changes. Didn’t get that completed before I stopped for the day.
It was the first normal FAC we’ve had in a long time which was nice.
FIRE: Day 55 (8/22)
I slept like crap last night, but when and had a decent three mile run. Despite tweaking my back at the beginning of the run I was able to finish pretty strong. I’m just about back to Barcelona running shape after getting three straight weeks of running in.
I the tech debt changes to yesalittle. I also discovered a bug for Spanish natives learning English, where the Spanish phrase descriptions weren’t showing up. That fix was included as well.
FIRE: Day 56 (8/23)
I started thinking through another idea for an app that I could build. I wrote some high level notes and ran it by Claude, and it was supportive of the plan and had some good other ideas. That’s actually meaningful since Claude Opus 5 has been kind of blunt and contrarian to me lately.
The app will essentially be a day trading AI agent that I give full authority over a separate brokerage account with a small amount of seed money. The focus will be on the tech and particularly how to constrain the AI agent so it doesn’t go rogue and do dumb things (margin loans, do forbidden actions, etc). Whether or not it manages to make any money is a lesser concern, but will be an interesting side story.
After a few hours of tech stuff I put the computer away and read my book. I realize I need to put some boundaries on when I’m doing what. Basically I need a schedule.
