Peanut butter oat balls are a filling, no-bake snack that you can make in twenty minutes. They’re a homemade ZBar alternative at a fraction of the cost and double the protein. My family eats these constantly, as snacks and alongside a light meal to make it filling.

The Numbers
The most intriguing number is a person eating nothing but peanut butter oat balls for an entire month. At 2,000 calories a day (about fifteen balls) it would cost $60.42 for the month. It would only take $18,126 in investments to passively pay for that.
By comparison, these are even cheaper than the college standby of Cup Noodles at $108.75 per month ($1.81 per 1K kcal).
| Cost Per Batch (20 balls) | $2.72 |
| Cost per ball | $0.14 |
| Cost per 1,000 calories | $1.01 |
| Cost per month if a person ate nothing but this | $60.42 |
ZBar Comparison
At times in the past we have bought ZBars to fill the same snack role, making for an interesting comparison. Peanut butter oat balls stack up favorably across both cost and macronutrients.
| Peanut Butter Oat Ball | ZBar Chocolate Chip | |
| Cost Per Serving | $0.14 ✅ | $0.69 |
| Calories Per Serving | 134.94 ✅ | 150 |
| Protein (g) Per Serving | 4.29 ✅ | 2 |
| Sugar (g) Per Serving | 4.86 ✅ | 11 |
| Fiber (g) Per Serving | 2.22 ✅ | 2 |
| Cost Per 1K Calories | $1.01 ✅ | $4.63 |
| Protein (g) Per Dollar | 31.58 ✅ | 2.90 |
Now with a basis of comparison for cost, the savings of our 20 minutes of labor is $11. That’s $33 per hour in savings. When you combine that with the end result of a healthy snack, it’s not a bad use of time.
Caveats
The prices shown here are current as of August 27th, 2026. The numbers for calories and macronutrients were pulled directly from the product labels.
One swing ingredient you could play with is the honey. It’s 26% of the cost, and accounts for most of the sugar. If you prefer an even cheaper ball with less sugar, try reducing the honey.
A final note – scurvy is not worth the money saved if you are entertaining the thought of eating peanut butter oat balls for a month.
